21st Sunday after Pentecost

For Sunday service, Diann Ojikutu will be serving as our Worship Leader and leading us through the Opening Prayer and the Call To Worship.

This week’s scripture reading will be Mark 10:17-31

As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”  Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good?  No one is good but God alone.  You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.’”  He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.”  Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”  When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.  Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”  And the disciples were perplexed at these words.  But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!  It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”  They were greatly astounded and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?”  Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.”  Peter began to say to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.”  Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life.  But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

A special thanks to this week’s Ushers, Richard Drath & Catrice Corbon.

And to Dallas Geil and the GSUMC Choir for this week’s Gift of Music, “How Can I Keep From Singing?” arr. by Andy Beck.

Looking To Help Out?

We are currently looking for help for our Coffee Hour after Service. This is a great time for everyone to come together and talk with coffee and amazing snacks. We need volunteers who can help set-up, clean-up, and/or bring cookies or other treats*. To sign up or learn more, email Holly at office@gardenstreetumc.org or stop by the desk before/after service. You can also check out other volunteer opportunities such as Ushering and Flowers for Sanctuary.

Celebrating Advent

Advent begins December 1st.  As usual, we have chosen a devotional guide:  On the Way to Bethlehem by Rob Fuquay.  This year, in addition to Christmas as our destination, we will pay attention to the places along the journey that led to that starry night when a Child was born who would change the world: Rome (a place of longing); Jerusalem (a place of waiting); Nazareth (a place of simplicity); Bethlehem (a place of humility); and Persia (a place of return).

In each, we will ponder our own milestones – the progress and potholes on the way and what we gain, which will be different for each person. God speaks to us where we are.  Consider sharing this trip by joining a small group. Journeys are more impactful (and richer!) when we travel with others.

In addition to the groups already in place, we hope one of the following options will fit your schedule!

Sunday afternoon, before or after worship

Tuesday afternoon, 2:00 – 3:30 at the church

Virtual gathering online (Zoom), TBD

RSVP: To help us plan, please let Holly know your preference by responding on the back of the attendance slip during worship, in the chat for those of you who attend online, or by emailing her (office@gardenstreetumc.org).  We will also have an “in-person” group gathering following worship on October 20th if you’d like to meet others who might be joining you.

TURN OUT THE VOTE!

This Sunday will be our last opportunity to write postcards to swing states for the upcoming 2024 Election. We plan to have up to 75 postcards available to complete.  We will set postcards out as usual during the coffee hour.  We will also set out the postcards by 1:45PM prior to the Worship Service, if you are so inclined to come early.

Thank you to each of you who has contributed to this invaluable effort towards empowering disadvantaged voters to have their vote counted!
